TP maintains that this 1958 recording is no match for the '45.
And he's correct--on sonics, at least. But this is a fine performance, too.
In fact when High Fidelity reviwed it back in '58 they considered it a better effort
than the '54 version! High Fidelity aside, it is interesting to note that
Fiedler himself may have had reservations about the '54 recording.
It is rumored that all there of RCA's mainstays--Fiedler, Reiner and Munch--were
dissatisfied with their early stereo masterpieces, Gaîté, Also Sprach and
Daphnis & Chloe respectively. And it is a fact that all three conductors
re-recorded these same pieces in RCA's latest, most up-to-date sound!
